The School: Chingford Church of England Primary School

Chingford Church of England Primary School is situated in North Chingford close to Epping Forest, in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. They have just started working with Enabling Enterprise and the Year 5 students were the first students to put their enterprising skills to the test with their Day in Politics.

The Challenge: Day in Politics

The week of May 7th is an exciting one for the whole of the UK with the upcoming election. It was especially exciting for Year 5 students from Chingford Church of England Primary School who were challenged to become politicians for the day, create political parties and campaign in a year group election to rival the main UK political parties.

The Results:

Students from both Year 5 classes at Chingford Church of England Primary School worked really hard to enter the world of politics as started the day with a House of Commons style debate.
Over the course of the day students formed new political parties and began to create manifestoes that prioritised issues that they would fight for if elected to power. From a greater emphasis on recycling in schools, litter picking in the borough of Waltham Forest and measures to prevent racism. Overwhelmingly however, students wanted to fight for animal rights. From promises that if elected to allow pets to be brought into school to stopping overfishing and banning oil tankers Chingford Primary School students might have been from different political parties but they were definitely united in the cause of animal welfare!
Whilst the You Count Too Party were elected overall by their peers – all the students showed real promise in representing the people of Great Britain.

What they said:

  • “It was brilliant. Students who normally find working in teams challenging, really tried their best to work on this skill.” – Teacher, Chingford Church of England Primary School
  • “So many of the skills that they have used today are transferable and the students have been so excited to take part in something so topical. ” – Teacher, Chingford Church of England Primary School

Well done to everyone who was involved.
