The Schools: Gilbertstone Primary School

The Year 5 students from Gilbertstone Primary School, an Enabling Enterprise Partner School, in Yardley, South Birmingham have, recently successfully completed their Number Games Lesson Time Projects – so their creativity was never in doubt as they visited IBM recently to take part in an exciting business challenge.

The Business: IBM, Warwick

IBM is one of the world’s leading IT companies. Having helped NASA put man on the moon and invented the calculator, IBM continue to develop super-computers software, focussing on solving problems using technology.

The Challenge: Team Players

Supported by volunteers from IBM, the 9 and 10 year olds were able to find out about the career pathways of the enthusiastic IBM apprentices, who set them the challenge of designing and manufacturing new IBM business cards. Links were made between the values demonstrated by employees of IBM and the skills the students were developing through enterprise education in their lessons at school. Each team agreed they would aim high to be the very best team, designing and making the best products possible.

The Results:

Following a tour of the business to gain an insight into what a working day looks like at IBM the students were buzzing with creative design ideas to share. By listening carefully, staying positive and using their imaginations each team was efficient, effective and created exciting products. Therefore it was important that their presentations did their products justice!

What they said:

  • ” “This is a tremendous experience for the children. This real life, work place challenge really puts the work we are doing in school, embedding the challenge skills into our curriculum, into focus. I am so proud of how they are getting on in their teams.” Teacher, Gilbertstone Primary School.
  • ” “It has been a joy to see the children so involved in the challenge, Enabling Enterprise is such a great idea and I only wish I had been able to do these projects and challenges when I was at school. I would definitely be willing to volunteer with EE again.’ Volunteer, IBM. ” Volunteer, IBM
  • “This is awesome. I now know what IBM do and I know I want to work here!” Student, Gilbertstone Primary School

Thanks to IBM for such a great trip day, and to Gilbertstone Primary School for coming along.
