The School: Southgate Primary School

Southgate Primary School in Crawley, West Sussex is a mixed 2-form entry school and has been a Partner School since January 2015. Each year group has carried out one project and they have had a really positive start to their Enabling Enterprise programme.

The Challenge: A Day in Politics

The purpose of this challenge was to build links with the upcoming General Election. It also helped raise students’ understanding of British values and the concept of democracy. This Challenge Day gave them an opportunity to share ideas and use their leadership skills as well as their imagination.
The children worked in teams to create a party manifesto and designed their own promotional materials. The day ended with exciting hustings before one party in each classroom was elected.

The Results:

The children were excellent at sharing ideas and using their imagination to promote their parties. They managed to get their points across and were able to stay positive throughout the day, even when they had to compromise on a few suggestions.

What they said:

  • “What really impressed me was the way the children showed empathy for other people when thinking about the changes they wanted to make.” – Year 5 Teacher, Southgate Primary School
  • “The debating was the best part for me because I got to practise using speaking and listening skills.” – Year 4 Student, Southgate Primary School

Well done to everyone who was involved.
