The School: Gayhurst Primary

All pupils at Gayhurst Primary School in Hackney took part in the Moonbase Challenge Day on Friday 27th February as the culminating activity of their exciting week learning all about different jobs. Throughout the week the pupils had lots of visitors into school to talk about their roles in the world of work, so the challenge day gave the children the opportunity to put the skills they’d been hearing about into practice in a fun hands on way.

The Challenge: Moonbase Challenge Day

Linking to the theme of careers, the children thought about who would be best to send to a distant moon to start a new civilisation; a doctor, a farmer, a vet or a builder were some of the jobs they discussed in teams to make their perfect crew. Teamwork, sharing ideas and staying positive were especially important skills the children honed over the day as they designed a new species of animal, created a 3D model of their dream city and then gave persuasive presentations about why their groups’ ideas were the best to the rest of their class.

The Results:

There was a fantastic buzz around the school on the day and all the teams took to the challenge particularly well. It was a great way for the children to think about all the different careers involved, such as managers, designers, architects and advertising executives and what skills these particular jobs require.

What they said:

  • “It’s been my favourite day. All the children have really enjoyed it and been really engaged all day” – Teacher, Gayhurst Primary
  • “I really enjoyed working as a team today. It’s important to communicate, stay positive and not to argue to be a good team” – Student, Gayhurst Primary

Well done to everyone who was involved.
