The School: Weston Park

Year 3 students from the Crouch End school arrived at Crossrail ready to hone their enterprise skills. They had already been developing these key skills through their lesson time projects to design and make toys and redesign the class reading area to be more effective.

The Business: Crossrail, London

As one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects, it comes as no surprise that Crossrail employs thousands of people in a huge range of different jobs as they change the subterranean face of London. It’s very encouraging to bring students to a company that through ambitious targets looks to minimise its impact on both the environment and the communities they operate in.

The Challenge: Bridge Building

Over the course of the day the students learned about some of the challenges that Crossrail had overcome. They then went on design the most imaginative bridge they could, before working in teams to make a scale replica of the landmark bridge. Volunteers from Crossrail, including a trained architect and a civil engineer, helped the students throughout the day to create something really special.

The Results:

All of the students showed great imagination through the design and construction phases. The volunteers commented on how well the students got on and how impressed they were with the engineering prowess they had seen. The teams cooperated throughout the day to solve the problems they faced.

What they said:

  • “One problem we beat was that we had to share most of our items, because we didn’t have one each” – Student, Weston Park Primary
  • “I’ve never worked with Year 3 before and I found them all very engaging.” – Volunteer, Crossrail
  • “We were good at aiming high and sharing ideas, our bridge was the best because it was the tallest.” – Student, Weston Park Primary

Thanks to Crossrail for such a great trip day, and to Weston Park for coming and making the day such a success.
