The Enabling Enterprise team were delighted to hear that teachers at the New Charter Academy in Ashton under Lyne had decided to run the Enabling Enterprise Business course with 256 of their students in Year 9 this academic year.
The school, which specialises in Business and Enterprise, is currently delivering the course to students for one hour every week. As students begin to design products to sell in their very own marketplace, the school will invite Year 5 pupils in from some of their feeder primary schools to act as customers, and to be taught how the products have been made by the older pupils.
Ian Philips, Business and Enterprise co-ordinator at the school, said: “So far, both staff and students are really enjoying the course. The emphasis on developing enterprise capabilities fits in perfectly with our focus as a Business & Enterprise Academy and it’s also just what our students need to prepare them for the future. As an Academy, we have developed our own set of Learning Skills… so the course is working very well as it provides lots of opportunities for our students to develop their skills.”
Students at the school have also shown great enthusiasm about the challenges they have taken part in. Uzma Akhtar, who studied the Business for Science course last year, commented: “It is amazing because it taught us a variety of skills that we will need later in life. We didn’t just learn about science or enterprise, as it was a combination of the two subjects. We had the opportunity to work independently and also in teams which was fun.”
Each of the students on the course will have the opportunity to acquire an NCFE Level 2 Award in Developing Enterprise Skills as a direct outcome of taking the course, which will prove to be a great addition to the qualifications they will gain through their other subjects.
